The hotel, owned by John Buck, was the site of the first meeting of Jersey City's earliest municipal government. The first mayor, Dudley S. Gregory, and the members of the common council of Jersey City assembled in the hotel on April 16, 1838. They gathered at the four-story double-frame building, used for many years as a livery and exchange stable, to begin conducting business for the newly formed Jersey City.
