High School Level Awards

First Prize -- "Disco Power"

(5 min. 20 sec. video) by Matthew Silver, Bergenfield High School Sophomore. Reminiscent of Saturday morning cartoons this "over the top" original narrative displays the videomaker's impressive skill in the use of sound effects and video editing.

First Prize -- "Escape"

(5 min. 15 sec. video) by Matthew Silver (see above). This bizarre comment on TV viewing also showcases the artist's considerable skill in the use of audio.

Second Prize -- "The Smacktastic"

(15 min. 14 sec.) by Justin Elijah Strawhand, Sayreville War Memorial High School Senior. Unique and imaginative, this original piece is characterized by interesting camera shots ad sophisticated tongue-in-cheek dialogue.

Third Prize -- "Liverwurst and Roses"

(17 min. video) by Nick Baldwin, Barnstable Academy Junior from Upper Montclair. Adapted from a short story by Ellen Conford, this beautifully polished engaging romantic comedy explores the pitfalls of teenage boy-meets-girl. The filmmaker uses his own high school as a setting for his impressive screenplay.

Historical Perspective Award -- "AmeriKKKa the Ugly"

(20 min.) by Hassan Heller, Teaneck H.S. Sophomore. The videomaker has achieved impressive archival compilation and employs interesting juxtapositions of footage and still photographs to present an insightful look at racism. Visuals from the present day, the Civil Rights Movement, media portrayal of African Americans, and slavery images are accompanied by the music of John Coltrane.

Honorable Mention -- "AmeriKKKa the Ugly"

(see above)

Honorable Mention -- "Feeding the Birds"

(2 min. 48 sec.) by Greg McClellan, Bergenfield High School Junior. An amusing claymation about a man feeding birds -- with an unexpected twist! Good lighting and nice forms characterize this short "twisted" piece.

Honorable Mention -- "Sweet Daddy"

(5 min.) by Zorinah Juan, Bergenfield High School Junior. A playful look at the "noise pollution" spouted by a stereotypical class how-off and the reactions of his unwitting audience. Strong extemporaneous acting and good editing make this an interesting piece.
