Fall 2017 Workshops

Praxis Core

This series of workshops is developed to assist College of Education students register and prepare for the Praxis Core. Sessions include the following: Introduction to the Praxis Core and Workshop Series; Writing the Argumentative Essay; Writing the Source-Based Essay; Writing Core: Multiple Choice Items; Reading Comprehension; Mathematics for the Praxis Core; and Time Management and Final Preparations.

Workshops will run on Mondays from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. in The Hub, Room 121.

CHICAGO STYLE

This workshop covers Chicago Manual of Style formatting (paragraph structure, in-text citations, footnotes and endnotes, bibliography). Students may bring in previously written essays and ask questions regarding specific issues.

Workshops will run on some Mondays from 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. in The Hub, Room 121

Note Taking

Note-taking provides benefits beyond creating a record of what was presented in a lecture. Effective note-taking keeps students alert, engages their minds, and emphasizes and organizes information. A set of concise, well-organized notes from each class session provides students with what they need for studying, learning, and reviewing after class. This workshop is developed to help students learn tips and techniques to build their note-taking skills. This workshop is in collaboration with The Office of Specialized Services and Supplemental Instruction (OSS).

Workshops will run on some Tuesdays from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. in The Hub, Room 121

Let's Write (developed for International Students and English Language Learners)

This workshop focuses on familiarizing English Language Learners (ELL) with English in academic writing. Students will discuss grammar, learn how to differentiate between formal and informal writing and learn sentence structure, word choice, and the expectations for most academic papers (research, paragraph structure, and citation).

Workshops will run on Tuesdays from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. in The Hub, Room 121

Grammar

This series of workshops covers common grammar and usage problems, such as run-on sentences, dangling modifiers, subject/pronoun agreement, and subject/verb agreement.

Workshops will run on Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. in The Hub, Room 121

APA

This workshop covers basic APA (American Psychological Association) formatting as well as the importance of engaging the lexicon of the discipline. Students may bring in previously written essays and ask questions regarding specific issues.

Workshops will run on Thursdays from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. in The Hub, Room 121.

Writing the Advanced Research Paper

This workshop serves students taking either a literature, historical, or creative capstone class, senior honors thesis, or independent study, covering different writing processes and techniques on how to effectively manage time, specify a topic, conduct research, and write an advanced paper.

Let's Talk (Developed for International Students and English Language Learners)

This workshop focuses on familiarizing English Language Learners (ELL) with verbal and written communications common in American English and helping them understand slang, idioms, tone, and speed by analyzing dialogue in videos and text on social media. Workshops will run on Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. in The Hub, Room 107A
