New Jersey City University is committed to the development of citizen leaders who are prepared to make positive contributions for the greater good. We believe that leadership is a process and students represent various stages on the leadership continuum. Thus, NJCU is dedicated to meeting students where they are and designing leadership programs that not only encompass leadership concepts and skills, but also focus on the personal development of each student. Leadership at NJCU is an all-inclusive, servant-based, collaborative process. This process seeks to develop students who ultimately model and self-identify as leaders who are self-knowledgeable, competent, compassionate, ethical, conscious, and authentic.
Goal 1 To enhance student learning and development;
Goal 2 To develop in each student greater self-knowledge: an understanding of one’s talents, values and interests, especially as these relate to the student’s capacity to provide effective leadership;
Goal 3 To develop students who, at some point during the leadership process, model and self-identify as and leaders who are competent, compassionate, ethical, conscious and authentic.
Social Change Model of Leadership
A leader is not necessarily a person who holds a formal leadership position or who is perceived as a leader by others. Rather, a leader is one who is able to effect positive change for the betterment of others, the community, and society. All people, in other words, are potential leaders.
The process of leadership cannot be described simply in terms of the behavior of an individual; leadership involves collaborative relationships that lead to collective action grounded in the shared values of people who work together to effect positive change.
The notions of a leader as a change agent and of leadership as collective action to effect social change suggest that a conscious focus on values should be at the core of any leadership development effort. We believe that any program in leadership development should focus not only on the value implication of any proposed social change, but also on the personal values of the leader themselves.

The Emerging Leaders Institute is a freshman retention initiative designed to strengthen the leadership skills of first-year students at New Jersey City University. Students must apply and are accepted based on interests and previous leadership experiences. ELI offers a full academic year of workshops, outings, leadership opportunities and more that help to prepare first-year student to become successful in future leadership roles on campus. These roles may include and are not limited to: SGO Officers, Student Representatives on University Committees, Student Members of the Board of Trustees, Interns, etc. For more information about the Emerging Leaders Institute, please click here.
Sponsored by the Student Government Organization, Campus Life, and the Office of the Dean of Students, this retreat is an engaging and enlightening opportunity for student leaders to build leadership skills, network, foster better working relationships, and develop as individuals prepared for the work of the greater good. This retreat is a three-day, overnight, working/fun-filled activity usually located at a campsite or conference center. This year the Summer Leadership Retreat participants include SGO leaders, Emerging Leaders, students involved with Community Service and Residence Life staff members. In the future, it is the hope of the Office of the Dean of Students to include student leaders from other programs such as The Learning Communities (TLC) and the Opportunity Scholarship Program.
Also sponsored by the Student Government Organization, NJCU Project Leadership is a one-day leadership conference held on-campus. This event is scheduled during the winter break to help remind students about their role as student leaders and prepare them for the programs, activities, challenges and opportunities that may arise during the Spring semester. NJCU project leadership is open to all university student leaders including Athletes, Resident Assistants, SGO club and organization members, Emerging Leaders, etc.
College Leadership New Jersey is a collaborative effort of the bachelor’s degree granting colleges and universities in New Jersey. It seeks, honors, challenges, and develops college students who have demonstrated the potential to provide the leadership needed on their campuses and in their communities to address the problems and prospects of New Jersey. The program includes a seven-day residential component and a 30-hour community service requirement to be completed the following year. Participants will be selected based on leadership potential, community/campus interest or involvement in organizational activities, and clarity, creativity, and quality in response to application questions. Academic records and community or campus awards are considered but are not the determining factors for program acceptance.
