How Do I Become a Tutor?

Undergraduate applicants must have completed 60 credits, be in good academic standing with a CGPA of 3.5 or higher, have a A- or better in the subject to be tutored, and be available for training before the semester begins. Transfer students must complete one semester at NJCU before applying. Please note that the hiring process is competitive; therefore, submitting an application does not guarantee employment. 

Students seeking to become peer tutors are required to submit the following:

  • Completed application (available at The Hub's reception desk)
  • Unofficial transcript

After an initial interview, two letters of recommendation from NJCU faculty will be required.

  • One recommendation must be from a professor in the subject to be tutored. For example, if you are applying as a math tutor, submit at least one recommendation from a math professor.
  • Recommendations can be attached to the application or emailed

In addition to the above, applicants must have the following:

  • Be in good academic standing with a GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • A- or better in the subject to be tutored
  • Have earned at least 60 credits*
  • Available for peer tutor training (held the week before the semester begins).

*Transfer students must have completed one semester at NJCU before applying.
Please note that hiring process is competitive as the applicant pool is strong; therefore, submitting an application does not guarantee that you will be hired.

TUTOR TRAINING PROGRAM

Tutor Training

The Hub’s training program adheres to the guidelines of the International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC) set by the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA). Training sessions are scheduled one week prior to the semester and conducted by faculty and professional staff. Training components are listed below.

  • Definition of tutoring and responsibilities
  • Basic tutoring guidelines
  • Techniques for successfully beginning and ending a tutor session
  • Learning theories/working with students with disabilities
  • Handling difficult students
  • Role modeling
  • Setting goals/planning ahead
  • Communication skills
  • Active listening and paraphrasing
  • Referral skills
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Academic integrity: plagiarism
  • Modeling problem solving

In addition to CRLA certification requirements, Hub tutors are required to attend Continuing Tutor Training (CTT) as implemented by The Hub, which includes workshops in specific areas related to NJCU classes and campus leadership. This allows for a holistic approach to tutoring as tutors not only assist with academic support, but tutors are aware of the student support services throughout the campus. Training sessions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Departmental procedures
  • Leadership
  • Ice breaking techniques
  • Tutoring for the Praxis Core
  • Tutoring for the GRE
  • Group tutoring
  • Annotating
  • Effective reading
  • Technology
