Art—New Jersey Art Teacher Certification Program (P–12)
About This Degree
(MUST BE COMBINED WITH EITHER A COMPLETED OR IN-PROGRESS DEGREE IN ART)
The New Jersey City University Art Teacher Certification Program (ATCP) prepares the art student to become a certified Art Teacher for grades Preschool through 12 in the State of New Jersey. ATCP is pursued concurrent with the NJCU BA in Art or the BFA degree. Students who have already received a Bachelor of Art in Art or a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at an accredited university or college enter in the Certification Only program. NJCU is a Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC) and National Association of Art and Design (NASAD) accredited institution.
Requirements for admission to this concentration are:
- A minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average (CGPA) of 3.0.
- A minimum of B- or better on all education courses
- Passing scores on the Praxis CORE, or 560 verbal, 540 Math on the SAT, or 23 or higher on the ACT, or 155 verbal, 156 quantitative on the GRE.
- No candidate can be admitted to the Art Teacher Certification Program without having met the Praxis CORE requirement.
- These required courses can be taken before the Praxis CORE: WSGT 110 or MCC 218, ECE 212 , BIOL 224 or BIOL 225
- No candidate can enroll in any required certification classes without having met the Praxis CORE requirement. The certification classes include: EDU 280, LTED 230, EDU 315, ART 520, ART 530, ART 393, ART 469 and ART 501.
- All candidates must submit their passing CORE scores as well as the Praxis 10133 Art Content Knowledge by March 15 in the semester prior to taking the fall course ART 393 Clinical Practice I.
Clinical Placements:
- ART 393 Clinical Practice I and ART 469 Clinical Practice II are the New Jersey state-mandated student teaching placements. They must be completed over the course of one academic year in two sequential semesters.
- ART 393 Clinical Practice I will be offered only in the fall semester
- ART 469 Clinical Practice II will be offered only in the spring semester
Passing scores on the Praxis CORE Academic Skills for Educators Tests, as of 9/1/15:
- Math Test #5733 (Passing Score 150)
- Reading Test #5713 (Passing Score 156)
- Writing Test #5723 (Passing Score 162)
Required Subject Praxis test for Art Teacher Certification
- Art: Content Knowledge #5134

Requirements for completion of this degree track are:
- Completion of NJCU General Education requirements or equivalent
- Passing scores on appropriate Praxis II Exam
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
- Successful completion of ART 393 Clinical Practice I and ART 469 Clinical Practice II
This includes successful submission of the performance assessment, edTPA, as required by the New Jersey Department of Education.

Gertrude Morses Scholarship for Art Teacher Certification candidates
Up to $2,000 will be awarded.
This scholarship is available to students who are pursuing the NJCU Art Teacher Certification Program.
Further information is available at the Art Department main office. Applications are due in May of the academic year.
Applicants must submit the following:
- Proof that they have taken and passed the Praxis CORE exams that are required for entrance into the Art Teacher Certification Program.
- A portfolio for review (10-20 jpeg images).
- A personal teaching philosophy statement
- A minimum GPA of 3.00
- A Degree progress report, showing that they are enrolled in the Art Teacher Certification Program.
Applicants who have already taken and passed the Praxis subject exam, Art Content Knowledge will be given extra consideration.
Applicants should be in their final year of the certification program.
