Kudos to our Staff and Students!

Despite the challenges we have been facing during this pandemic, our Department remains strong in its commitment to helping students achieve their learning goals while maintaining health and safety.

Thanks to the support and cooperation of both our staff and students, we were able to successfully complete our hybrid, in-person and remote classes safely last semester. This was due to proper communication, effective planning, proper allocation of teaching and safety resources, student-centered program implementation, and teamwork and support of all stakeholders. The Chemistry Department faculty and staff, together with the NJCU administration and other support services, have been working as a team to ensure everyone’s health and safety while in classes and anywhere on campus. This semester, we continue to balance learning and safety by:

  • Offering Hybrid, Hyflex, and Remote lab and lecture classes to our students to address individual circumstances
  • Incorporating staff and students’ feedback and ideas in the planning and implementation of Hyflex and Remote classes
  • Providing students with written guidelines, learning policies and timely guidance relating to Hyflex and Remote Learning Modes
  • Modifying experimental procedures and creating videos to enhance clarity and promote social distancing
  • Limiting instructional lab occupancy to seven, with students coming for in-person labs every two to three weeks
  • Locating student lab work stations 6-feet or further away from each other and procuring of additional basic lab equipment
  • Providing individualized lab materials and equipment for each in-person student to avoid sharing and minimize movement in lab rooms
  • Using technologies to clearly livestream Hyflex lectures and labs to remote students to encourage engagement and teamwork
  • Coordinating with Housekeeping and other Support Departments regarding timely room sanitation and disinfection, and technology needs
  • Incorporating safety measures in the planning and implementation of Hyflex lab classes and chemical research
  • Requiring students and staff to complete the COVID-19 Health Screening Questionnaire and non-contact temperature monitoring
  • Providing the PPE, hand sanitizers, and disinfectants in a timely manner
  • Providing loaner laptops and readily accessible IT support to students and staff

We welcome you to experience our unique approach to learning chemistry safely. Please do not hesitate to contact me (raslanian@njcu.edu) to request for a virtual meeting or tour of our Department and facilities.

Good luck and stay safe!
