About This Degree

The Master of Arts in Music Education offers coursework that develops discipline and knowledge in music theory. The degree expands on music philosophies and theories learned in undergraduate training and encourages teachers to build a sense of autonomy in the classroom while enhancing the lives of their students.


The Master of Arts in Music Education is designed for advanced study in music and music education for teachers of music in public and private schools K-12. The program offers preparation leading to: certification as a music supervisor and administrator; teaching at the university level; and entry into a doctoral program in music education. The culminating activity is a Master’s level thesis. 

Requirements for acceptance in the Masters of Arts in Music Education: 

  • Bachelors Degree in Music
  • Music Teacher Certification, with the exception of International students
  • Proficiency in performance (major instrument or voice)
  • An entrance exam for satisfactory proficiency in music theory, ear-training, and music history
  • Admission to graduate study and admission to degree candidacy established by the university.
