The original information literacy rubric, entitled Criteria for Information Literacy Competency, was developed by Grace F. Bulaong, Library Director; Dr. Helen Hoch, Professor of Biology; and Robert J. Matthews, Associate Professor of Business Administration at New Jersey City University. The rubric was included in the publication Developing Research & Communication Skills: Guidelines for Information Literacy in the Curriculum published by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education in 2003, and also published in Assessing for Learning: Building a Sustainable Commitment Across the Institution, in 2004 by Dr. Peggy Maki, former Director of Assessment, American Association of Higher Education. It is based on the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education published by the Association of College and Research Libraries in 2000.
Revisions have been made to the original version of the rubric after campus-wide feedback at NJCU. The latest version is also based on the above mentioned standards, but with a more specific and practical approach. The following examples of the latest version are listed to facilitate use at NJCU.
