NJCU Media Arts Department to Present ‘An Evening Of Selected Shorts’ from The Black Maria Film Festival’s 37th Annual Tour on April 10

'On the Cusp' by NJCU Alumnus Yuri Alves Is Among Featured Works

An evening of award-winning selected shorts from the Black Maria Film Festival’s 37th Annual Tour – 2018, will be presented on Tuesday, April 10 at 7:00 p.m. in Hepburn Hall, Room 202 on the Main Campus of New Jersey City University at 2039 Kennedy Boulevard in Jersey City. Admission to the event is free and open to the public.

The program was co-curated by Nicole Pometti, NJCU Integrated Media Arts Production (IMAP)  MFA candidate, and Jane Steuerwald, NJCU Professor and Black Maria Film Festival Executive Director, and focuses on topics of global concern including personal stories of empowerment, LGBTQ issues, and social justice.

Among the featured works is On the Cusp is by Media Arts alumnus Yuri Alves (Class of 2006). The film is a moving portrait of celebrated skateboarder and activist Tommy Cuba of Newark, NJ, who will be present for a question-and-answer session.

The Black Maria Film Festival was founded in 1981 as a tribute to Thomas Edison’s development of the motion picture at his laboratory, dubbed the “Black Maria” film studio, the first in the world, in West Orange. The Festival attracts and showcases the work of independent filmmakers internationally. The Black Maria travels to audiences at museums, cinemas, cultural centers, colleges and universities throughout the United States and abroad. The Festival is a project of the Thomas A. Edison Media Arts Consortium, an independent non-profit organization housed in the Media Arts Department of NJCU.
