The Silent Witness and Baring Our Souls Opening Reception

    Location:
    GSU Art Gallery
    Time:4:00 PM4:00 PM

Please join us as we spread awareness during this week-long display showcasing two exhibits: The Silent Witness and Baring Our Souls to highlight October’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Baring Our Souls is a display of shoes decorated by women living in shelters and tells their stories of abuse. The shoes are symbolic of women walking and having a journey from hope to healing and from tragedy to triumph.

The Silent Witness National Initiative is a display of life-sized outlines of victims of domestic abuse. Each figure represents a real person and their story.

There will be an open mic for survivors to share their stories and performance art.

Community partners will also be in attendance during the Open Reception to share their services.

Art House Productions’ “In Full Color” is gearing up its run at NJCU and its fourth season in 2018. "In Full Color" and its educational outreach program are potential models for small nonprofit arts organizations to create jobs for artists as well as continually promote their mainstage programming through profitable supporting satellite performances. The program was founded as a co-production between Art House Productions, one of the most successful small nonprofit arts organizations in Hudson County and New Jersey as a whole, and 68 Productions, an independent theater company founded by IFC director Summer Dawn Reyes. This show continues to spark conversations about diversity, prejudice, cultural exchange, mixed race identity and other important topics. "Thinking in Full Color" features poignant and hilarious pieces; it is free and open to the public.

Amel Khalil, Nancy Mendez-Booth, founder and director Summer Dawn Reyes and special guest Venida Rodman Jenkins. Featuring works by Sholeh Wolpe and Dena Igusti. This will be TIFC’s third visit to NJCU; they are thrilled to once again be in front of such a bright, generous audience.

    Artist Talk: 6:30 p.m.

Throughout the ages, artists have sought to deceive viewer’s eyes, and in our digital-image-saturated era, how can we discern what is real, anymore? The four contemporary artists gathered in this exhibition – Curt Ikens, Kim Keever, Martin Kruck, and Jeremy Coleman Smith – employ unconventional materials and methods to construct the illusion of space. Curated by Midori Yoshimoto.
