Dr. Herman is an urban sociologist, specializing in ethnically/racially/economically changing neighborhoods and social conflict. He is the author of two books on urban riots/rebellions in 20th century America, with particular focus on Newark and Detroit. He is also interested in European cities and how recent waves of immigration have led to new restrictions on the use of public spaces. Locally, he is interested in how gentrification is impacting on communities in New Jersey.
