JERSEY CITY, N.J. | New Jersey City University (NJCU) and the NJCU School of Business have become the first New Jersey-based university to partner with Forage — a company that provides career skills training from Fortune 500 companies through a virtual platform — to provide students with a self-paced remote work experience.
These experiences offer students the opportunity to learn career skills from a wide variety of Fortune 500 companies. In the era of the COVID-19 pandemic, this virtual work experience replicates internships, through which students learn relevant tools and skills necessary to compete in the current job market. There will be no cost to participate for existing NJCU students.
"Forage is thrilled to partner with New Jersey City University as our inaugural university partner in the state of New Jersey,” said Forage CEO Tom Brunskill. “In collaboration with NJCU, we'll ensure that every student across NJCU has free access to meaningful work experience opportunities with world-leading companies that they can undertake from the comfort of home.”
The virtual work experiences offered by Forage are voluntary and typically take between 5-6 hours to complete. At the conclusion of the program, students can earn a certification from the participating employer in any number of subject areas. These experiences and competencies can be extremely valuable to students seeking a competitive edge when applying to future internships and jobs.
“At the NJCU School of Business, our focus is on graduating job-ready, data-driven future business leaders” said Founding Dean Bernard McSherry, “Our new partnership with Forage will help to equip our students with critically important real-life skills.”
Some of the partner companies offering projects to the NJCU School of Business this spring include: Deloitte, KPMG, General Electric, JP Morgan, Citi, Grant Thornton, Accenture and more, in the areas of business analytics, data science, problem solving, innovation, soft skills, human resources, commercial banking, investment banking, consumer banking, audit, markets, and more.
“At Forage, we're passionate about leveling the playing field to ensure every person has equal access to opportunity, irrespective of their background”, said Brunskill. “What's most exciting about partnering with NJCU is the University's commitment to diversity. With a large number of first-generation college students and being the most ethnically diverse student body in New Jersey in one of the most diverse states in the US, this partnership extends Forage's socially-minded mission."
Josh Iannuzzi, the Director of Career Services for the NJCU School of Business added: “We are eager for our students to take advantage of this accessible opportunity for virtual work experience. The combination of experiential education and the knowledge they are already acquiring in the classroom will give our students an edge in competing in the rapidly-changing global workplace.”
The mission of Forage is to “build a world where opportunity is truly evenly distributed, where technology allows more people to find the perfect career.” The organization has over one million student enrollments, 70+ programs in diverse industries and roles, and more than 100 companies represented.
