Maria Ameruoso, Literacy Coach, Jersey City Public Schools

"When I began the Master of Arts in Reading program, I was a kindergarten teacher and the program was so applicable to my daily practice. After I graduated, I was offered a literacy coach position in my school. I am now able to work with students and teachers, K-8th grade, and support best practices in literacy. Earning this degree was one of the best decisions of my professional life.”

Chris Campbell, Teacher, Union City Public Schools

"The faculty at New Jersey City University is second to none. They became more than just professors, they became my mentors, my role models and my friends. I can honestly say that I never would have finished my degree had it not been for the professors at NJCU, and I'll never forget my time there."

Nadia Vazquez, Teacher, Union City Public Schools

“The master's program in reading and the NJCU professors was the best experience in my educational career. Each professor took the time to instruct us in real-life scenarios, techniques and strategies, assignments that opened our eyes to proven research and then helping us to change the world one class at a time. Thank you for inspiring me to become the best teacher my students deserve!”

About the Program

We prepare candidates with diagnostic techniques and strategies that address the many different types of literacy problems struggling readers and writers may have. Our graduate students learn strategies for working with all students, including special needs students and English language learners.

The Master of Arts degree leading to certification as a reading specialist is a New Jersey credential, but is eligible for reciprocal certification in most states. Upon completing the program, candidates may apply for reciprocal certification through other states’ Boards of Education.

Certification-Only Option

If you already have a master’s degree and graduate credits in literacy education, you may qualify for certification-only coursework. The New Jersey Department of Education must review transcripts to determine eligibility and identify any additional course requirements needed to qualify for certification.
