Student Guide for Working With Us

Follow these Steps to Get Started

If you are a declared Business major, you can start working with us today. Just take the following action:

  1. Create a GradLeaders profile and upload your resume
    Visit njcu.edu/career-resources to access the GradLeaders Career Services Job Board. Complete your profile and upload your resume (in Microsoft Word format). This platform has a "Resume Builder" function built into it. See this sample to give you an idea of how to create/format your resume.  
  2. Create a LinkedIn account and connect with the “NJCU SoB Career Services” page, along with the Director of Career Services “Joshua Iannuzzi”, and Career Coach, “Tylra D. Lee-Cummings”. If you do not yet have a LinkedIn profile, please establish one. When you reach out to connect on LinkedIn, make sure to personalize your connection request/message so we know who the request is coming from. 
    Connection requests will only be accepted if you customize the message request (as instructed here). Your LinkedIn profile should have your up-to-date information, including your education/employment details as well as a photograph, headline, and summary. See the LinkedIn to-do list for more guidance on building your profile and professional network.
  3. Make an appointment to meet with us. Once you have taken the aforementioned actions outlined in this guide, students can outreach the NJCU, SoB Career Coach, Tylra Lee-Cummings (tleecummings@njcu.edu) at 201-200-2188.

 LinkedIn To Do List: 

  • Connect with Career Services Director, Joshua Iannuzzi, by sending a customized message and request to connect (not just a blank connection request). 
  • An appropriate profile photo (not a selfie). This does not to need to be a professional head shot or portrait but you should be dressed professionally, framed from your shoulders up, against a plain background. This should not be a selfie. If you want a professional headshot, contact the Career Services department to see when the photographer will be available to take portraits for students. 
  • A customized and shortened URL. Instructions can be found here.  
  • An up-to-date headline. This should not include your title and company. You will want to consider adding your professional objective or the type of professional opportunity you are seeking. 
  • An up-to-date summary: This should be around 3–5 short paragraphs long, similar to your generic cover letter. It should walk the reader through your work passions, key skills, unique qualifications, and a list of the various industries you’ve had exposure to over the years 
  • An up-to-date experience section: This should include your current/most recent internships and jobs. Make sure your experience section is fleshed out with bullet points that describe what you did, how well you did it, and who it impacted with all of your previous employers. Be sure to utilize numbers and statistics along with employer logo when possible. 
  • An up-to-date education section listing your current work at NJCU along with any previous education you have. Do not include anything from high school or earlier.
  • Anything additional that can strengthen your profile. Add any projects, languages you speak, volunteer experience, and certifications that you possess. 
  • Add your email address to the contact information section of your resume. 
  • Obtain recommendations. Have someone who you've worked for or interned with provide you with a LinkedIn recommendation. Instructions can be found here.
  • Connect with groups and organizations. You can start with New Jersey City University (NJCU), NJCU School of Business, NJCU Alumni, NJCU Career Center, and any other organizations relevant to your current/future career
