New Pathways to Teaching in New Jersey – Secondary Education

The New Pathways to Teaching in New Jersey (NPTNJ) program provides a process for individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree (or higher) to become licensed teachers without having to complete a traditional teacher training program. Candidates complete courses online while working as a full-time teacher. The program is regulated and approved by the New Jersey Department of Education. Program coursework focuses on developmentally appropriate practices, curriculum, and the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to be an effective educator.

English as a Second Language Alternate Route

The NJCU ESL Alternate Route program provides a process for individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree (or higher) to become certified ESL teachers by taking classes while they are doing their first two years of teaching under a Provisional License.  Upon completion of the program, candidates will be eligible for the NJDOE ESL Certification.  Additionally, candidates who wish to pursue the Master’s degree upon completion may continue onto the M.A in Urban Education with Specialization in ESL for ESL Alternate Route Completers prog

Dual Endorsement Program: ESL and Bilingual/Bicultural Endorsements

This non-degree certification program is designed for students who already hold a standard New Jersey Department of Education teaching certification and would like to add the ESL and Bilingual/Bicultural Education Endorsements.

Graduate School Nurse Certificate Program

The Graduate School Nurse Certification program at NJCU is a robust, fully online stepwise graduate-level certificate program designed to prepare bachelor’s-prepared registered nurses for the specialty practice of school nursing. 

Students who apply for the Graduate school nurse certificate program can select either the non-instructional or instructional certificate option. The total number of courses for the first step, which qualifies students to become eligible to apply for the non-instructional certificate, is 5 classes (15 credits).

Students who opt to complete the coursework to become

Certificate in Alcohol & Drug Studies (CADS)

The CADS satisfies the academic requirement for New Jersey’s Certified Alcohol &Drug Counselor (CADC) credential. The other major requirements for the CADC are 3,000 hours of practicum at a licensed substance abuse treatment facility, 300 hours of clinical supervision, written examination, and oral case presentation. Special Education—Teacher of Students with Disabilities Endorsement (TOSD) Eligibility Program

NJCU provides opportunity for teachers currently holding a New Jersey Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing or a standard certificate in an instructional area to enhance their credentials by working toward eligibility for the Teacher of Students with Disabilities endorsement. This endorsement requires 21 credits though the candidate must be accepted to the program on or before 12 credits have accrued and meet all other requirements in the catalog. They may, further, matriculate into a degree program on or before 12 credits are completed, contingent on application to the Office of

Special Education—Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant, Endorsement Eligibility Program

NJCU offers a 24-credit Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant certificate eligibility program for New Jersey teachers who are already certified to teach Special Education or an allied field and who have had at least two years of successful teaching experience under a Standard Certificate. A copy of the Standard certificate must be submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies when applying for the LDTC endorsement. A Master’s Degree in Special Education from an accredited university is required for admission to the LDTC endorsement eligibility program.

English as a Second Language Certification

This non-degree certification program is designed for students who already hold a standard New Jersey Department of Education teaching certification and would like to gain ESL teacher certification or for students who not yet hold a standard New Jersey Department of Education teaching certificate and would like to pursue ESL teacher certification.
