The Arts at NJCU

May 1, 2016
Painting by student artist Leandro Henriquez

In Fictive Kinship, a solo exhibit inspired by the death of Sandra Bland, visual artist Kimberly Mayhorn used paintings, works on paper, installation, and a two-channel video to explore kinship or social bonding between unrelated black women. Although connected only as black women and through a tie to Texas, when Bland was found dead in a Texas jail cell after being arrested for allegedly failing to use her turn signal, Mayhorn recalled, “And even though I did not know her, I felt a kindred connection with her and I found myself mourning her death as if I knew her and thinking that could have been me…” When the exhibit traveled to the Visual Arts Gallery, it caught the attention of the Huffington Post.
