JERSEY CITY, N.J. | J.D. (Jayadhurganandh) Jayaraman, chair of the New Jersey City University (NJCU) Finance Department and an associate professor of finance at the university, is included as a subject matter expert in a NJ.com and Star Ledger article on a nonprofit focused on financial literacy programming for children in marginalized communities in grades K-12.

The March 20, 2024 article is entitled “How an N.J. man is teaching kids about finance with a beach ball and Connect 4” and was published by NJ Advance Media writer Daysi Calavia-Robertson. The article discusses Newark-based FinLit, founded by Shakor Jukes, which has a goal of teaching kids, most of them people of color, about budgeting, saving, investing, and other healthy money-managing habits.

Jayaraman, who has taught financial literacy workshops in cities across the state, is quoted extensively in the feature, including “What he’s doing is really inspiring, in the sense that he’s giving back to his community, but it’s also really smart and has the potential to be highly effective in tackling this problem in the long run.

Jayaraman had over 20 years of experience in the financial services industry, primarily in the areas of algorithmic trading, risk management, energy markets, and financial technology, prior to transitioning to academics. His research examines the use of innovative teaching methods, cutting edge technology, AI and behavioral science to engage students and improve financial literacy.

April will be National Financial Literacy Month. To read the full article, visit: https://www.nj.com/opinion/2024/03/how-an-nj-man-is-teaching-kids-about-finance-with-a-beach-ball-and-connect-4-calavia-robertson.html
