With almost 260 million speakers, Russian is the eighth most spoken language in the world and the second most used language in websites (after English). Besides being the official language of the largest country on earth, Russian has also great economic, political, and cultural importance for vast areas of Europe and Asia. Russian is an especially useful language in the fields of business, science, and technology, and has also been crucial in the development of many forms of art, including ballet, theater, cinema, music, and literature.

Our department offers classes of Russian language at the elementary level.

LANG 123: Elementary Russian I
This course teaches the essentials of basic communication in Russian, with a primary emphasis on oral communication (speaking and understanding oral speech). Emphasis is additionally placed on mastering the Russian alphabet, recognizing printed letters, and learning to write in cursive style. There are also classroom discussions of Russian customs and cultural attitudes. This course is recommended for students with little or no previous knowledge of Russian.

LANG 124: Elementary Russian II
This course is a continuation of LANG 123 (Elementary Russian I) and it is recommended for students who have already mastered the Russian alphabet and have knowledge of basic Russian grammar.
