The course runs for 7 weeks. Weeks 1-6 consists of 2 (90 minute) sessions per week and week 7 is a 3hour Equipment Lab

Week 1-2: T/R: October 4, 6, 11 & 13 (7:00 pm - 8:45pm with a 15min break) 
Theory: Learn what are the different types of interpretation, such as whisper, sight translation, short consecutive and simultaneous. Also, learn what is expected of you, in terms of behavior, interruptions, corrections and more. How to prepare for an assignment when you get materials and when you don’t get materials. Finally, what are some of the most common jobs you will find and the ethics you must uphold in each of these. Home assignments will be given. 

Week 3-4: T/R: October 18, 20, 25 & 27 (7:00 pm - 8:45pm with a 15min break) 
Techniques: Short Consecutive, Check Interpreter, Long Consecutive, Whisper and Simultaneous, learn what these modes of interpretation are and what it takes to master them. There will be in-class practice and home assignments. 

Week 5-6: T/R: November 1, 3, 8 & 10 (7:00 pm - 8:45pm with a 15min break) 
Market: How to reach potential clients, how to network with colleagues and how to price your work. Job searching. 

Week 7: T: November 15 (11:00 am - 2:00 pm : Hands-on Equipment Lab) 
Equipment: Learn about the different types of equipment, how to troubleshoot and install hardware. 

Course Delivery: The course will be delivered online via Zoom with a live instructor. The Equipment lab component will be in-person at the NJCU campus and attendance is mandatory. Special arrangements will only be made for non-resident students to take the Equipment Lab online at an additional fee. 

Training Cost: $595 per attendee. 

Pre-Requisite: HS Diploma, PC with Camera, Zoom application, internet access and advanced proficiency in English & Portuguese. 

How do I get Started? 

Step 1: Submit a Non-Refundable Application Fee of $25 and your resume via this portal.

Step 2: Instructor will schedule an interview via Zoom. Please be prompt and prepared. 

Step 3: Once admitted, you will be sent a link to register and pay

Course Objective: Students will learn to interpret in “simultaneous”, “consecutive” and “sight” modes at an advanced level as required to work in the NJ Court system. Students will become familiar with interpretation equipment as well as court terms and procedures.

Instructor: Everton Morais is a Conference and Diplomatic Interpreter with over a decade of experience interpreting for institutions such as the United Nations, Inter American Defense Board, American Arbitration Association, Church of the Nazarene, Columbia University, Harvard, MIT, Bradesco, Brazilian and Angolan Government Officials, Professional Fighters League among others. Being exposed to all of these fields has shaped Mr. Morais into a uniquely qualified professional who feels comfortable in most situations and knows how to deliver the right type of interpretation required in that field. 

Certificate of Completion: Course completers will be issued a Certificate of Completion for 21 Hours of Professional Training in English-Portuguese Interpretation from New Jersey City University 

Notes: Recorded versions of each class will be provided to registered students for further practice and to benefit students that may miss a portion of a course. Attendance is required to receive a certificate of completion. Each week requires ~ 3 hours of self-paced learning and practice.
