Tamara T. Cunningham
Associate Vice President for Global Initiatives
Tamara Cunningham has been a leader in higher education for 20 years and has held instrumental roles in both Academic Affairs and Student Affairs. She is currently the Assistant Vice President for Global Initiatives at New Jersey City University (NJCU) where she oversees the institution’s strategic internationalization plan. In addition to international partnerships, International Programs & Study Abroad, the American English Program, international summer camps and the ACE Internationalization Lab are the pillars that report to Ms. Cunningham’s Global Initiative’s unit. Ms. Cunningham is a champion of everything global and has journeyed abroad to establish strategic partnerships, cultivate donors, recruit international students and secure study abroad opportunities for NJCU’s domestic students. During Ms. Cunningham’s tenure as the new Senior International Officer, the University has seen an increase in international students and faculty-led study abroad trips, and the campus has transformed into a more internationally diverse and culturally-rich community.
Ms. Cunningham serves with a number of professional international organizations, and she is currently pursuing a doctorate in Educational Leadership at St. Peter’s University.
She holds a master’s degree in Communications and Information Studies from Rutgers the State University, and a bachelor’s degree in English from NJCU.
Senior Director for Global Initiatives
Jamilah came to NJCU in 2018 with a nearly two-decade background in tertiary education, and over one decade in International Student Services as a Designated School Official. She is a New Jersey native and is passionate about international student services. She has lived in Morocco with her family for three years where she taught English as a foreign language.
Jamilah holds a BA in Political Science and Anthropology and a MS in Global Affairs from Rutgers University. She currently is completing her education at Seton Hall University where is beginning to write her dissertation in the field of Higher Education Leadership Management and Policy.
Director, Office of International Programs
Craig Katz has been Director of New Jersey City University’s Office of International Programs since 2010, providing support services to the University’s international students and scholars and managing NJCU’s exchange and Study Abroad programs.. He has lived and worked in a number of countries and has been an English as a Second Language teacher and ESL program director, an International Student Advisor, and a Study Abroad coordinator at several colleges and universities in the US. Mr. Katz has a Bachelors degree in History from Rutgers University and a Masters degree in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) from Temple University.
Programs Coordinator, Global Initiatives
Vaughn has worked at the Office of Global Initiatives since 2016, first starting as an intern in the Confucius Institute. Vaughn works with NJCU’s partner institutions to collaborate on immersive cultural, and programs; dual and joint degree programs; and on special student mentorship programs. She has worked with the Confucius Institute at NJCU to introduce the Chinese language and culture to the NJCU Community and beyond. She has brought both NJCU students and local New Jersey high school students to China for language and cultural immersion programs.
Vaughn comes to New Jersey City University from Seton Hall University’s dual degree master's program in Asian Studies and Diplomacy. Prior to that she lived in a district of Suzhou, China for two years as a Head English Teacher, teaching English as a Foreign Language at an International Baccalaureate Programme school. She is a New Jersey native, and holds a Certificate of Eligibility and TEFL Certification.
Programs Assistant, Global Initiatives
Sylvia Osafo-Williams has been the Programs Assistant at the Global Initiatives department since November 2018. She works on various programs, organizes all administrative work, and assists the Global Initiatives team in addition to operating as the Designated School Official (DSO).
Prior to NJCU she worked at Hudson County Community College operating as a Perkins Grant Program Coordinator, where she organized and coordinated federally funded Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs and events. Sylvia completed a transatlantic internship program in New York from 2011 -2012 and worked at a global conference company. This internship program earned her a Postgraduate Certificate in International Business Practice.
Sylvia is originally from the United Kingdom and worked at several universities, nonprofits, and radio stations over the past decade. She holds a Masters in Career Counseling from Canterbury Christ Church University in Kent, England and a BSc Joint Honors Psychology & Sociology degree from Brunel University in West London. Sylvia was born and raised in the UK and is of Ghanaian heritage. In her spare time, she volunteers at Jazz events in association with New Jersey’s Radio Station WBGO.
Graduate Assistant, Global Initiatives
Angelo has been coordinating numerous projects and works directly with students and student assistants in the office since 2020. Angelo is originally from Baltimore, Maryland and came to New Jersey City University in 2016 as a Music Business Major. During his undergraduate studies, he served in numerous student leadership roles at NJCU. He served as Vice President of Student Activities in the NJCU Student Government Organization in 2018, and the first President of the NJCU Student Activities Board in 2019. Angelo graduated in 2020 with a BA in Music Business and is continually serving as a peer mentor for college students advocating student leadership and academic excellence. Angelo is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Marketing at the NJCU School of Business.
