The Center for Community Engagement creates and fosters a commitment to lifelong service within the NJCU community by encouraging students, faculty, and staff to engage in meaningful service projects that make a positive impact in communities of limited means in Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey, the United States, and the world.
Although the primary goal of community service is to serve others, participants benefit from making a difference and helping others in many other ways. Among other benefits, participants often: increase their sense of civic responsibility as well as academic self-confidence; earn higher grades and academic credit; develop leadership, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills; deepen their understanding of a specific community as well as national and community issues; expand their perspectives by working with and learning from people of different races, cultures, ages, and life experiences; discover the practical applications of education; have an impact on issues that are personally important; gain job experience; demonstrate commitment to a cause or belief; explore career opportunities; serve as a role models; and create lasting memories.
