Conformance- How well a system or project meets a set standard

With the application of pressure to mounds of fresh adobe, the goal is to seek and uncover the potential of clay, making some fit a particular standard.  In doing so, the disruption of the functionality of wheel thrown work is forced then to focus on the language of the created form.

Uses experiences in the current aesthetic language to push the traditional profile of wheel thrown work to express clear geometric forms

In Conformance the created forms may have Influences from the simple, elegant drawings and paintings created by John Bailey’s still-lifes and the dynamic pieces of  Brancusi.  Using bold earthy colors to recall the clay in its fresh, uninfluenced form and potential of the plasticity in clay the concept of faded memories remain in the soft subtle colorations.

I have been trying to develop a language using forms thrown on the wheel for 10 years,

I started working with functional potters in high school and at my associates and gained a lot of influence from traditional Japanese song celadons and shinos mixed with new American fires of rich reduction cobalt and copper reds. My reaction was to try and clarify the forms adding clear geometry to the natural roundness of working on the wheel and removing dynamic glazes to enhance the shadow play of the more complex forms.  The pressure put on all of us to conform to the set standards of our world and culture is immense.  These pieces of clay have experienced pressure on the wheel to be what I needed them to be for my work…
